Olympic Torchbearer David State pops the question during his Relay leg in Loftus, North Yorkshire

David State, a committed, long-term volunteer from Redcar in the Tees Valley, ensured that he created his own piece of Olympic history this morning.

On his leg of the Olympic Torch Relay, which passed through the village of Loftus in North Yorkshire, David proposed to his girlfriend Christine Langham and she immediately accepted to ensure that 18th June 2012 would be a date that neither of them would ever forget. David and Christine have been together for 18 months and are expecting their first child next month so 2012 promises to be a year that lives long in the memory.

David was nominated to be an Olympic Torchbearer for the extensive charity work he has carried out in his local area. David has been involved in the scout movement in his local area for over 10 years and has raised around £10,000 in that time. David is also in training for his 4th charity run and will be competing in the 2012 Great North Run later this year. As well as being a 4 year volunteer to the British Red Cross, David was sworn in to be a special constable for Cleveland Police in September 2010 and has spent the last 2 years helping to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in the Cleveland and Redcar area
