Double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington has begun her final countdown to London 2012, where she will attempt to defend her 400m and 800m freestyle titles in just a few weeks’ time.
Adlington qualified for Team GB in impressive style at the British Gas Swimming Championships (selection trials) at the London Aquatics Centre in March, setting the fastest time in the world this year for the 800m freestyle, with a mark of 8:18.54.
In addition, the distance specialist is currently ranked second fastest in the world for 400m freestyle, with a time of 4:02.35, also set at the Trials in March.
Two weeks ago, in her final competition before the Games, she won the 200m freestyle to earn a place in Team GB’s 4x200m relay squad. Adlington also confirmed that she’s in great shape in her favoured 800m freestyle event, winning in another fast time of 8.19.03.
As well as her plans for victory in the coming weeks, Britain’s top swimmer is hoping this historic summer of sport will inspire more people to swim.
The Mansfield star is supporting the British Gas ‘Free Swims for Britain’ campaign, which is giving away swimming sessions to those who sign up online to back Britain’s swimming teams.
Rebecca has been talking about her hopes for the summer, her experience of competing in the Olympic pool the importance of home support and why she wants to inspire people to take the plunge.
The ‘Free Swims for Britain campaign’ runs to 30th August 2012.
