An incredible 330,000 pupils from 1,400 schools across Scotland are expected to take part in Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week this week – over 50% of primary and secondary schools in Scotland and almost double the amount of schools than in 2010.
Scotland’s biggest school sporting event, National School Sport Week is held in association with sportscotland – the national agency for sport – and uses the power of the London 2012 Games to inspire school children across Scotland to take part in more sport, by encouraging them to have a go at a range of different Olympic and Paralympic sports.
Marking the start of the week in Glasgow on Monday, schoolchildren at Scotstoun Stadium broke the world record for the ‘most people to run 100m in an hour relay’. Olympic champions Sir Chris Hoy and Jason Gardener were on hand to offer tips to youngsters as the week got off to a record-breaking start.
In other events, GB judo player and Olympian Euan Burton joins youngsters at Mearns Academy, Aberdeenshire on Wednesday in a mentoring session; and closing the week at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh on Friday, Scottish rower Katherine Grainger welcomes the London 2012 Olympic Torch prototype to Scotland for the first time, before hosting a session of children’s activities that will be attending by London 2012 mascots Wenlock & Mandeville.
This year, parents are urged to get behind National School Sport Week and pledge their support online for their child taking part in the week. Schools who reach the minimum number of parent pledges of support are in with a chance of winning Olympic Games tickets and even the chance run with the Olympic Flame in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
